Two different kinds of electricity
There are two different kinds of electricity, static and current.
Static electricity is electricity at rest. (In fact, static means “not moving”.) It happens when two objects are rubbed together, causing electrons to build up.
Have you ever gotten a shock after walking across the floor and then touching a doorknob or a person?? That is static electricity. Your normally neutral body picked up electrons from the floor. The electrons leaped from your body to the metal object.
Lightning is a form of static electricity that happens when negatively charged clouds are attracted to positively charged things on Earth. You might remember that Benjamin Franklin harnessed the power of lightning in his famous kite experiment.
